Antivirus software is a term used to describe a computer program that attempts to identify, neutralize or eliminate malicious software. This type of software is so named because the earliest examples were designed exclusively to combat computer viruses; however most modern antivirus software is now designed to combat a wide range of threats, including worms, phishing attacks, rootkits, trojan horses and other malware.

This tutorial we will see list of free antivirus software available windows operating system

Clamwin

Free, small footprint anti-virus and anti-spyware scanner anti-virus software tends to be big and bloated, use plenty of RAM and system resources, and generally clog up your system. Worse is that increasingly, anti-virus makers make it difficult to buy anti-virus software by itself, and include firewalls, anti-spyware and other software with it. If you want a clean, mean piece of anti-virus software that does just one thing — protect against viruses — you’ll want this program.

t has a small footprint, and doesn’t take up much system resources. It will scan your entire hard disk at once for viruses and spyware, or can scan individual files and folders.

It also includes a Microsoft Outlook add-in to remove virus-infected attachments automatically from your email. There is one drawback to the program, though: It oesn’t include real-time virus protection.

Supported Versions :- Windows 7/Vista/XP/2003/2000/Windows Server 2008 and 2003

  25. URGENT!!!

Hi, thank you so much for the list! Helped me alot and narrowed my search for the many different kinds of antivirus now-a-days.

However, which from your top 3 list is the best antivirus for me? I have a 1GbRAM 1.73GHz Core-2-Duo laptop that runs windows vista home basic. It came with norton antivirus already but it has expired couple of days ago.

I’m looking for an antivirus thats not heavy for the system since I’m needing it for this laptop… We all know that laptops performs slower than a desktop computer even if you get the best performing laptop in the market. So I need something that does not freeze, pause or slow down the system as I use it or while I’m on it. Coz there are few antivirus I’m aware of and have used in the past that slows down the system that it takes a few seconds or even a minute or so just to open a window or a file. This is crucial for me specially that I’m always using my laptop for LIVE MULTIMEDIA (music performances, videos, presentations) purposes.

Can you help me figure out which FREE antivirus bests fits for my laptop??? It would be a great relief and a great satisfaction if you could help me figure out which one.

  26. I am computer illiterate, but can anyone answer my question of why does a person have to give out their credit card info if these are supposed to be “free”? Just curious. Thanks!

  27. You can contact me via my email for more detail; absadayi@yahoo.com

  29. hi,i am using windows vista and my norton security virus is going to expired after 2 days, can u advise me which free downloading antivirus is best suit in my software.waiting for the feedback.thank you

  30. I tried Avast (full paid version) and thought it was TERRIBLE!! I was in the middle of a game and all of a sudden my computer crashed. After a LONG journey I found out it was because the antivirus program failed to catch the trojans. Since then, I have used Norton’s. I know Norton is kind of expensive (especially when you don’t have the money to really spend on it) but it’s well worth the price versus the headache of viruses :)

  31. Hi I can’t afford to pay for new antivirus software. Have McAfee at minute, but it has expired. Can you tell me how to get free software which is compatable with windows vista. I know norton is useless. Thanks for your help.

  42. There is no 100% fool proof AV. We were using McAfee at work and it flagged a windows system file as a virus crippling 8 machines and thousands worldwide! It could have been any AV that did it, McAfee just happens to have a very large market share and so it was most noticable.
Of all the free ones I’ve tried, Avast is currently the one I would recommend for Windows, coupled with Malware Bytes as a backup scanner. IMHO Avast has stronger Rootkit protection than AVG (AVG provides rootkit heuristics with the paid version but only minimal protection for the free — rootkits are the nasties that are hardest to remove once you get them). You should never assume that an antivirus program will stop everything whether you’re paying for it or not. The virus makers are always one step ahead so a little common sense in opening untrusted content is worth far more than any AV free or otherwise.

  43. thanx for this list but it good without offers

  44. Sir,
I tried AVG and it didnt work.

  45. Your list indicates a number of programs compatible with windows 2000, however, a number of them no longer support windows 2000, for example; AVG and others. What I want is a free antivirus for windows 2000 with real time protection, not just a file scanner, and I cant find one.

  46. Finding protection for 2000 OS, SQL, Office, etc will be very hard. It is over 11 years old and even unsupported by Microsoft. I will suggest the simple upgrade to at least 2003.

  47. Hey – there is a reason, why someone (as eg I) does not want to upgrade from W2K.
It is so tiring if one has always to justify why he is still content with a running system.

  48. You guys missed the best “Free” one !

I have seen AVG and Defender beaten and the only one that can’t be topped is SuperAntiSpyware !!

I went on a computer that was riddled with Adware, Trojans, Cookies and Spyware. It prevented me from opening Defender and AVG. I ran SuperAntiSpyware and it cleaned out 1139 threats and has been running smoothly ever since.

    Top that !

  49. @ Command: Why would I spend quite a lot of money, and endless hours of reloading, replacing and reconfiguring other programs to “Upgrade” from a totally stable system which runs all the programs I want ( and unlike the new systems, almost certainly isn’t having many new viruses written specifically for it ).
The only reason I, and I assume manathumga and Burt are her, is because this page claims to list win2k compatible free anti-virus programs, which from my point of view, is the main limitation of Win 2k

  50. @ All Windows 2000 users.

Avast Free 7.x does work, provided you have SP4 AND rollup 1
