Error in installing Update Rollup2 for Windows XP Media Center 2005

When you try to install Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Centre Edition 2005 you may face with the following error:

“This upgrade can only be run on Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.”

although you already run the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. This could cause a problem in upgrading to Windows Media player 11.

 

This could be a problem with an incorrect “ident” value in the Windows Registry. To resolve the problem update the value for the following WIndows Registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\MediaCenter]

Navigate to

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
      \SOFTWARE
         \Microsoft
            \Windows
               \CurrentVersion
                  \MediaCenter
                 
Set the value of the “ident” key accordingly based on one of the following:

3.0 – Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (RTM)

3.1 – Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 Rollup1

Or, use this “Ident Set” tool from Salloway to select and set the value. 

Once done, now download and install Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Centre edition 2005 from here and that should fix the problem.
