Even more a problem is that Opera changes a a whole lot of registry keys to make itself a default browser making it even more a pain.
Ok. Now, here is the good news, khaytsus, at xda-developers.com forum has provided a provided a cab file which can make the whole process of resetting the registry keys to make IE the default browser.
Click here to download “FixIE.cab“. Unforunately, this requires you to register to the forum to download the file. Upload file to your Windows Mobile phone and click it to run the CAB file. This should reset Internet Explorer as a default browser.

What Opera you running? I’ve been using Opera 9.5 Beta on my Treo800w for sometime now and there is a setting (no need for a registry edit here) to make Opera your default or not browser. Just open Opera and click the “^” icon on the right. This brings up a popup SIP at the top is the “Settings” click that. Go to the “Advanced” tab and click it. Scroll to the bottom, there you’ll see “Set Opera as default browser” make sure thats unchecked. That should do it.
You could also do this:
Open Opera, goto Settings, Advanced, and uncheck the “Set Opera as default browser” option.

The lovely people there suggest a much simpler way of doing things.
