Even more a problem is that Opera changes a a whole lot of registry keys to make itself a default browser making it even more a pain.
Ok. Now, here is the good news, khaytsus, at xda-developers.com forum has provided a provided a cab file which can make the whole process of resetting the registry keys to make IE the default browser.
Click here to download “FixIE.cab“. Unforunately, this requires you to register to the forum to download the file. Upload file to your Windows Mobile phone and click it to run the CAB file. This should reset Internet Explorer as a default browser.

What Opera you running? I’ve been using Opera 9.5 Beta on my Treo800w for sometime now and there is a setting (no need for a registry edit here) to make Opera your default or not browser. Just open Opera and click the “^” icon on the right. This brings up a popup SIP at the top is the “Settings” click that. Go to the “Advanced” tab and click it. Scroll to the bottom, there you’ll see “Set Opera as default browser” make sure thats unchecked. That should do it.
You could also do this:
Open Opera, goto Settings, Advanced, and uncheck the “Set Opera as default browser” option.

The lovely people there suggest a much simpler way of doing things.
You must be hallucinating becuase there is no such option in opera and I checked six times lol
Charlie is right. I don’t see the settings on the version on my HTC Touch HD.
FixIE.Cap really worked for me on HTC O2 XDA Guide.. I don know about how it works on other models. This i have confimed in my PHONE..
Thanks for providing the info here
This .cab works wonderfully on the Touch Pro 2. At least the T-Mobile USA version. Thanks!
I found no problem the settings in Opera to uncheck the option for Opera as default.
To make IE the default browser, go into IE/Tools/Options
Check the box.
The next time you hit a web page it will ask if you want to change it to IE – you say “yes, I do!” and then it’s set.
Hi there,
Same problem here too , after installing Opera Mobile 10 ( dumb me , I said yes when Opera asked if I wanted to make Opera default.. huff ) I didn’t find any option to reset IE as default …
FixIE.cab solved the problem nicely , thanks a bunch. I found another site which showed manually which reg keys to edit to get it done, to say it mildly , I am not at all confident messing around with my windows mobile phone’s registry …. its small , its delicate, and its darn frail lol …
Jule is right.
Just do:
To make IE the default browser, go into IE/Tools/Options
Check the box “ask if IE is default browser”.
The next time you hit a web page it will ask if you want to change it to IE – you say “yes, I do!” and then it’s set.
