I too was having the 80070057 error when trying to install Vist SP1. I called MS's tech support line for Vista SP1 (free for consumers i.e. not on a domain). Here's what they had me do:

Drop your Windows Vista DVD in the drive and run through an upgrade installation.

Reboot into safe mode and reinstall SP1 (standalone).

Now, while the SP1 did install... after installing and rebooting into normal mode I could not get to the desktop. The place where you'd normally see "Press Ctrl + Alt + Del" or a picture waiting for a password did not show up. Just "Windows Vista Business" at the bottom of the screen.

What I did to correct this was, reboot into safe mode again. Go into the control panel, local security policy and "Enable" Do Not Require Ctrl + Alt + Del to login.
