Error(s) Found: Code 80244019 when trying to run Windows Update in Windows Vista indicates a problem in connecting to Windows Update Server. As a initial check, check if you are having connectivity problems. Also, if there is a proxy server used in your Internet Explorer, try to disable the proxy and check if that helps. This may not work in some corporate environments. Please check with your network administrator in this case.

If all looks fine then this could be a problem in Windows Registry and you may have to make the following registry modifications:

1. Click Start – Run, type regedit and press enter.

2. Navigate to the following Registry key

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
  \SOFTWARE
     \Policies
        \Microsoft
            \Windows
                \WindowsUpdate
                    \AU

3. Once in, from the right-pane, change the value of the key

“UseWUServer”=dword:00000001

to

“UseWUServer”=dword:00000000

4. Reboot the Windows Vista PC and that should fix the problem.

I’ve seen a lot of of our users did not find this resolving the problem. One other thing I would suggest in Windows Vista is to stop or disable the “winHTTP Web Proxy Auto Discovery Service”

WinHTTP implements the client HTTP stack and provides developers with a Win32 API and COM Automation component for sending HTTP requests and receiving responses. In addition, WinHTTP provides support for auto-discovering a proxy configuration via its implementation of the Web Proxy Auto-Discovery (WPAD) protocol.

To stop the service

1. Click Start – Search for Services.msc and press enter.

2. In the right-pane, scroll down to the “winHTTP Web Proxy Auto Discovery Service“. Right-click and select “stop”.

3. Now, start Windows update and check if that helps.

If anyone tries this, please take a moment t post your comment about the results which could help other users.

i am having the same problem!

“i could go up to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\ but i dont see any windows update directory or AU i mean no WINDOWSUPDATE/AU directory folders any help will be apreciateed”

Same here. No WindowsUpdate/AU Directory. What now?

“i could go up to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\ but i dont see any windows update directory or AU i mean no WINDOWSUPDATE/AU directory folders any help will be apreciateed”

Same… no windowsupdate/au directory. what’s now?

dammit, same problem, so no one knows what to do from here?

Just back from holiday!!!
I would suggest creating the \windowsupdate\au key in the right panel and add the registry key/value as described here and see if it fixes the problem

I have the same problem no WindowsUpdate/AU Directory help

but where would i create the /windowsupdate/au?

can anyone help?!!

When in

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\

Right-click Windows and select “New Key”. This creates a new folder. Now, Name it as WindowsUpdate. Simiarly create AU and then add the said keys in the right-panel and see if it helps.

ok i created the folders, now i am unsure what i have 2 do next

My computer has started blocking 3 of the people that had been e-mailing me. What do I do on this

I think the folder WINDOWSUPDATE / UA, enter the value, but I still like. I do?

It doesn’t work, I’ve got the same problem…

I’ve Error(s) found: code 80244019.
follow the your instruction:
[hkey_local_machine\software\policies\miarosoft\windows\(I hav’t this folder – WindowsUpdate\AU)
What to do me? please advise me….

Hello! I’ve also gotten this error code, also created the registry keys, but it hasn’t changed anything. I have an Acer laptop (probably half of the problem) and Windows Vista. Please let me know if there’s anything further that I can do. :)

Hy,I create a new key\WindowsUpdate\AU,and then inserted new value, and then try a old value and it’s not working!

So if anybody has an idea it would be great to share with the rest of us!

Hey, i’m gonna use details incase there’s confusion. I got the same code, 80244019 can’t check for updates, I followed the steps above and did not have the WindowsUpdate key, so I made one, followed by makeing an AU key. The only value in there was the Default value with nothing in it. So I made a new string, name UseWUServer, value “UseWUServer”=dword:00000000 (is this all the correct way to do it so far?)
anywho, after this, I restarted my computer, checked for updates and got error code 80244019 so unless I messed something up, so far I did as told and it still didn’t work. Any ideas?

Oh, and if it means anything, when I try manually downloading SP1 off the microsoft site, it says server not found, I’m assuming it’s related and not of the fault of the microsoft site… just adding that in incase its important

Wow. That first solution worked like a charm. I’ve had that on my to do list for ages and I’m so grateful to have found this post. Thanks!

Okay guys, here it is. I tried the suggestion of goinging into the Services menu, scroll down until you see winHTTP Web Proxy Auto Discovery Service, right click stop and then try to download Updates again. Not only did my Updates download right away, but I then re-tried the Readiness Tool update (which failed before) and it downloaded with no problem. I have to tell folks that I have been trying for months, in vain, to install the Windows Vista Updates and the Vista Service Pack SP1. I encountered numerous errors along the way (80244109, 80070500, to name a couple) and this was not a virus issue, it was a Windows Defender issue, among other things. Stopping the Web Proxy Svc was a cure and the other was finding a decent disk defrag, outside of the one that comes with Vista. (I am running Vista Home Premium) After paying for some defrag programs and trying out the free ones, my first Updates that finally downloaded happened after I ran Auslogics Disk Defrag. This is a free program and it is excellent. Thank you to the person that posted the winHTTP Web Proxy info. I am THRILLED to finally have my computer up to date.

thanks its work realy wonder full answer

Not sure if this will help anyone, but none of the above worked for me.

I run a ClarkConnect proxy at my house to allow ’safer browsing’ for my kids.

Proxy’s setup properly in FF & IE, but it still wouldn’t work. In testing some other stuff, I added the proxy via netsh winhttp. I did a show proxy from ‘netsh winhttp>’ and it showed the config I had set. I did a reset proxy, which cleared the winhttp proxy settings, and now I can download updates.

To do this, open a command prompt and type netsh. It will give you a ‘netsh>’ prompted. Type winhttp, which will change the prompt to ‘netsh winhttp’. Do a show proxy and see what it says, it should say direct access. If it doesn’t, record any settings it does have (just in case you need them later) and type ‘reset proxy’. This will reset the WinHTTP proxy settings, so do this at your own risk, as you may break more than you fix.

FYI, hope this helps someone.

It is so great. It works well after I change it.

utterly useless, nothing mentioned in any of the posts or the above article provided a solution to this problem. for someone who isn’t literate in programming or the ins-and-outs around this kind of thing, its frustrating. i’m ready to throw out my laptop. useless!

I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. I had the problems with Windows Update and Windows Defender.

I tried to work out the problem with the instructions provided here, but they didnt help.

However i finally found out that there was a trojan that had hijacked my DNS server addresses.

I got rid of it by using SUPERAntiSpyware. I suggest u download it and make a full scan of ur computer.

Hope this solves the problem for some of you.

P.S. Thanks for the help provided.

Hi

I Had the same problem.

I found a solution on a dutch website (I am Dutch)

I had some kind of virus. I needed to go to my networkconnections rightclick on my lan connection and select properties.

Then select tcp ip 4 and click properties

Ip and DNS both on automatic, Then click advanced and go to the dns tab

I had 2 dns adresses below. And when I deleted both, Everything worked again.

You can find the virus with Hijackthis. En then manually remove it from system 32 in safe mode

I hope I translated it properly

None of this well-worded information worked for me. I think I got em all right but still nothing, had no Windows Update/AU keys, my winHTTP Web Proxy Auto Discovery Service was allready stopped, been checking for trojans and viruses but none of the programs Iäve used can detect anything threatening.:( I’m starting to give up on my laptop…

The below solution worked like charm for me………

thanks kalagarla worked 4 me also

Only remove the 2 DNS Adress manually in :

- Local Area Connectiom Properties
===> Intenret Protocol Version 4

And after deleted the 2 adress manually, the radio button switch autmaticallly on “Obtain DNS Server adress automatically”

Finally launch again the Vista’s update and it worked for mine…

I tryed the above service then HTTP and so on to restart that file and nothing seems to work still can’t download windows updates and Vista SP1

I found out it was my router blocking the connection with windows update. took my computer to a friend and with his connection I WAS able to update… Can’t find the way to stop the blocking.

Stopping the WinHttpAutoProxySvc under Services.msc stopped the problem. Windows Update worked again!

thx Danny changing dns adress with hijackthis worked for me too.

I had the same pb but I correct it following Jon Pawson instructions, I install the SUPERAntispyware, and I can update now. Thanks

Hi,

I’ve tried all of the things suggested on here, but all to no avail.

I created the reg key, checked my DNS settings, ran anti Spyware and everything else, but I still can’t run Win updates.

When I go to the MS websites it won’t even show my (legitimate) copy of Windows to be verified and can’t install ActiveX or d/l any patches.

Any further help would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Greg

Hi everyone,

Try this before you start deleting regedit stuff

I have had the same problem and tried a few of the things i read here but none worked for me. I talked to the fire dog guy at Ciruit city(CC) and said to plug my computer directly in the cable modem or DSL modem and not use the router. Turn the modem off and back on to reset it and then try to update windows. when i did this everything worked great i downloaded all the updates. I then pluged back into the router and all the problems was there again. my router was a linksys g wireless. I went back too CC and asked them they said it was possible for a virus to take over a router DNS directory and just to hit the reset in the back and it would work. well it didn’t work so i just bought a new router linksys band N router pluged it in and everything is working great for over a week. I have faster internet and a stronger signal around the house.

Hope this helps

Lenny

ANYONE FRUSTRATED AFTER DOING EVERTHING ABOVE HOLD ON AND READ BELOW PLEASE BEFORE GETTING PANTIES IN A BUNCH :) pLEASE JUST READ ALONG AND HOPE i HELP YOU SOME.

If you have already removed the registry keys, good.

If you couldn’t find them….good, don’t need em.

If you ran the MalwareBytes scan and found and removed the virus but its still not updating, or you did’t find the virus on your system…good…continue reading please.

The problem has to do with the DNS setting on your Lan, Wireless lan or router.

I would clear the DNS cache in command prompt with “ipconfig /flushdns”, after that do “ipconfig /registerdns”. Do this just to make certain its clean and working. Check it with “ipconfig /displaydns” to see ur current dns settings.

I found everything was find in the Lan and Wireless IPv4 settings and found my problem on the router of all things.

DON’T PULL THE RICH KID HACK ABOVE YOU DON’T NEED A NEW ROUTER. LOGIN TO IT. Look in the router manual or look online for info and how to login. Usually all u have to do is type 192.168.1.1 in your browser and go to that address. Should ask for login info, if u don’t know it…look in the manual or call the company.

REMOVE ANY STATIC DNS SETTINGS IN THERE AS USUALLY U DON’T NEED THEM. UNLESS YOU SET THEM UP AND THEN YOU NEED TO CHECK YOUR WORK:)

I found my problem in the router and fixed it no problem. Don’t buy a new one, find out how to reset it or just remove the static dns settings added by the virus. Good luck

tried everything but nuthin works..
i had to update some anti-virus programs, win defender and win update…

but i found the problem in the router…and got updates with my anti-virus progam..still, i cant update windows defender and windows update…

I am having the same problem as above… any help?

Hi everyone, i’ll be short, after 3 days of frustration i realized that: my router(netgear wgr614 v4) was blocking the way to the Microsoft site and windows updates.i upgrade it to the last version from the netgear site and now it works.Hope will work for you too!!!

Thanks. Now I’ve installed SUPERAntiSpyware and deleted the DNS numbers and finally my windows update works!

Thanks a lot Danny and Markus Kelamaa!

SUPERantispyware worked incredibly well and located the infected files. And after deleting them it all worked fine again!

THANKS A LOT!!!

After 2 days of fooling with this I realized how to fix my issue. It may not be the same fix for you, but here it goes:

I was connected to my neighbors router for service and have been for about 3 months. This just so happened to be the time that my last update had taken place. The router was preventing me from doing the update. Since I live in an apt complex, there are several unsecured lines that you can lock into for service. I tried it and bingo, problem was eventually solved.

But before all of that, I did scan my computer with windows defender and PC doctor in safe mode.

Installed SuperAntiSpyware, scanned, fixed 93 found entries. problem resolved for me. My question is; Why did Windows Defender not find this and I had to install FREE version of SuperIntiSpyware and run QuickScan (not full scan) to resolve this TROJAN?

I have tried all the other key stuff and stopping the Win HTTP service the thing that worked for me was downloading and quick scanning with SuperAntispyware. It detected Trojan DNS Changer. Which obviously was screwing with the DNS server. Once those were removed, worked just fine. If you are having this issue, install and scan with SuperAntispyware (free version).

i scaned my comp with SUPERantispyware and it found the trojan DNS changer
i went to quarentine and selected remove and reboot but when the comp is back on again, the trojan DNS changer is back again!!
am i doing something wrong or it just cant be deleted?

my line ended at [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft] running vista home premium

I couldn’t update anything at all, SUPERantispyware absolutely saved me,thanks

Could not update anything for approx 25 days. Superantispyware (free) found two trojan horses – DNS Changer and fixed the problem. Thanks to all who suggested the remedy. Cheers

CHECK you Router DNS settings. I spent 4 hours with Microsoft tech with no fix. I did have a trojan but never could resolve the updating until I found two bad DNS paths on my router. Delete them and make sure your Trojan has been eliminate and it will fix your problem

1/1/2009

YOUR TWO OPTIONS DONT WORK.

I have tried everything!! nothing seems to work ! I have about 6 antivirus programs running lol still nothing tried everything I was told to do nothing I have to say I am at a loss if anyone has any real fix’s please let me know.. I am not sure but maybe i have a newer version of the same problem ..? is that possible?

superantispyware solved the problem.

error code 80244019 fixed
i had this problem
drove me crazy

now windows updates fine
and i dont get redirected in google anymore or failed to load certain web pages
good luck

this works well:
SUPERAntiSpyware Professional
this is free software

hello , i followed the first way i added foldr named windowsUpdate then i added foldr named AU after that what should i do ? make just a key or string value or binary value ? and if i choose one of it how could make the “UseWUServer”=dword:00000000 ? is this just the name or what cuz it when i made it and press modify there are tow things 1- value name 2- value data

plz help me

Thanks a million as i was breaking my head how to solve the problem. Running SUPERAntiSpyware and removing DNS Changer Trojan fixed the problem.

I download the Software: SUPERAntiSpyware. Then run a scan. This Software found 2 Trojan fils and remove them. After a reboot Vista and Antivir can do a update. Please send an answer if it works.

THX SUPERAntiSpyware delete trojan thats ok but I now have other problem with code: C80001FE pls help ans sory for my ang

i download the SUPERAntiSpyware and it do wide out the fucking Trojan.
SUPERAntiSpyware is just awesome!!!

Same her… no windows update directory, \WindowsUpdate\AU,
so I tried fix number 2 and guess what… it is already STOPPED so nothing to stop.

Again, I have been through basically all the fixes above, including looking for static dns on my router (lynksis wireless G).. and I have downloadedaat least 6 more malware software… and I noticed no updates to Norton..which I uninstalled and re-installed an older version.. still no updates, no updates to Windows, and to most of the malware software.. when I request updates all of the programs say I am not connected to the internet so I cannot get any updates.

I tried Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, Error expert, regdefence, reg mechanicx 8, Stopzilla, HyJackThis, adwatch, adaware, … just to name a few… I have tried safemode on my VISTA machine, as well I seem to have errors like my version of Windows Vista is not an authorized copy and will not be supported any longer, and other scary incorrect messages..and I am sure this is a DNS hijack type of program. I worked on this for almost 55 days. HELP PLEASE!!!

YES.. malwarebytes did do the trick…
I found the files in the registry and I deleted everything Malwarebytes suggested… then I went to SAFE MODE and did another couple of scans all of which showed results that there was nothing compromising my system..re-booted in reg mode, downloaded and installed all my windows updates 19 of which was 60 MB.. and all seems well as I uninstall at least 6 other free software and leave my MALWARE BYTES software, since it worked. SO NOW I WANT TO KNOW HOW I GOT THIS TROJAN!!??

Thanks, cookiedood….

I had tried everything listed here, then came to your entry. Tried to download MalwareBytes but noticed that whilst I entered MalwareBytes.com, what showed up on the URL line was MalwareBytes.Org with a “Page Not Found”. Eventually went to Download.Com and downloaded the program from there. Ran it and behold – 9 nasty Vungo virus issues that had not been picked up by Defender or AVG Ant-Virus, plus a couple of online scans!!

MalwareBytes successfully deleted the virus and bingo – I was able to update.

Thanks for your advice. I was almost ready to hurl my laptop out of the window!

yeee this SUPER worked now i am free :d

After spending 2 days trying to fix this updates problem only had new computer 2 daya! ) i also tryed MalwareBytes and SUPERantispyware and yeahhhhhh this worked both found virus and torjans that my norton, avg never ,thanks for the advice :D

realize the two steps, but I still get the same error

I copyed this comment, because this advice did the trick for me – now I can update my computer again. I havn’t been able to do so since 26. november 2008. I’m a happy guy again.

DEREK HOPEFULY I WILL ANSWER YOUR QUESTION BECAUSE I HAD THE SAME PROBLEM AS YOU:

“i scaned my comp with SUPERantispyware and it found the trojan DNS changer
i went to quarentine and selected remove and reboot but when the comp is back on again, the trojan DNS changer is back again!!
am i doing something wrong or it just cant be deleted?”

Even when you do it right, windows update may not work. I was curious so I did the same scan with SUPERantispyware maybe 5 or 6 times in a row(each time there was either new or old TROJAN but I didn´t give up and did it over and over again, each time rebooting comp and deleting TROJAN from quarantine).. And at the very end I get rid of the problem :) )) you just have to be relentless.

THANK YOU VERY VERY MUCH EVERYBODY!! I am so happy right now, when my problem is solved.

OK, as previously stated by other users, this is definately a pain in ass problem. My cause is for sure the trojan virus, nothing to do with the registry values, router or any other proposed causes. I knew the problem was nothing to do with my router as we have 2 identical laptops with identical software, one was updating and the other wasn’t. Although it seemed to working fine on the surface, browsing the web etc.

On the advanced/DNS tab in the LAN settings there are indeed 2 alternative DNS address, that when deleted find their way back in there! Trojan is creating files in the windows/system32 folder.
Solution is downloading a good spyware program, several of the links here mentioned are out of date, try googling the the trojan DNS addresses.

THE SOLUTION FOR ME WAS A FREEDOWNLOAD called SUPERAntiSpyware which found and eliminated various threats ans solved the problem entirely.

Hi everyone. The solution that worked for me was removing the DNS server addresses. (Advanced TCP/IP Settings)

Thanks a lot !

I’m a pessimist by nature, and so I had no hopes when I decided to try out SuperAntiSpyware as a last resort!
Voila! It ran some scans, quarantited some items, and rebooted my PC!
And yes I could update my vista and my antivirus!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Three cheers to SuperAntiSpyware! You rock!!!!!!!!!

Hello to everybody, i tried y the last 3 days all possible explained solutions, but i did not get the way that windows Vista updates. I get the same error. I do not know what to make. I am writting you from Madrid(Spain).

Maybe somebody can give me a specific guide to follow in order that i make these steps.

Thanks a lot for yor help.
José

Ladies and gentleman SuperAntispyware is question for your ask with problem error code 80244019, nothing else only superantispyware. Thank you God Superantispyware is really super. thanks

I’ve had this problem since last wednesday – cannot run windows update plus google search does not work as it used to. When searching I don’t always get the destination url selected and I’m getting a lot more popups than normal.

Have tryed WU server file – cannot find, HTTP Web Proxy Auto Discovery Service – is set to stop, I’ve run both SuperAntispyware & Malwarebytes Anti Malware – all they found was tracking cookies.

This problem is only affecting my Vista laptop, the XP laptop, Internet tablet and my smartphone, all that connect through the same broadband connection, all work perfectly.

Anybody got any ideas before I do a full system restore on the vista laptop.

Thanks

I got the same problem. I did all the things mentioned above and nothing worked.

I have trouble with connecting to any update server. This means I also can’t update the definitions of Malwarebyts and SuperantiSpyware. Also I’m directed to the main-googlepage when I click a link every now and then.

I checked my DNS server address and it looks fine, 192.168.0.1

so I’m afraid it’s not the trojan horse that’s the problem here.

:(

Ok, turned out it was a trojan horse. I did a diagnose on the LAN and it said it could not connect to DNS server with some address that started with 85.

I manually downloaded and installed the new definitions of Superantispyware and it found some new threats.

After removing them I finally could automatically update everything again.

WOW THANK YOU SOOO MUCH THIS HELPED!!!! :D !!

Still not able to sort this problem out. Cannot manually update Superantispyware as Jos could. I am starting to suspect Norton 360 as being the problem, have run some tools downloaded from Symantec but I still cannot resolve the errors. Nothing still wants to update, still having errors with Google search, loads of popups and now Java runtime keeps starting! An ideas?

@Jimbo:

You tried to download and run this?
http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html

Thanks Jos for the link, was able to update the definitions on Superantispyware but it still does not find any problems with my computer. Have run windows live onecare scanner beta for vista, found two trojans but still has not solved the problem I am having. I am going to run the onecare scanner again and if that still cannot solve the errors, I’m going to uninstall and reinstall Norton 360 as I think some of my problems might be being caused by it’s firewall. Worth a try before I wipe the hard drive and do a full system restore.

I’ve run Windows Live Onecare Scanner Beta for a second time found the two trojans again, they mustn’t have been deleted the first time, removed them. Have now been able to run windows update, 7 updates, Google search now works correctly, not getting any popups – so job done.

Link to beta scanner :http://onecare.live.com/site/en-us/default.htm

Now all I’ve got to do now is get Java working in IE7 – but them again I might try Google Chrome!

Cheers and thanks for all the assistance

The solutions 1 registry edit 2 win http do not work..

The reason for this error in windows/defender update is due to infection by a trojan (HijakDNS) that changes the ipv4 dns to 85.x.x.xx thus preventing updated of not only windows but of many common antivirus programmes like avg. avira, kaspersky, nis2009 and others. It also blocks acces to downloading the solution software which is superantispyware.

Here r the steps that worked for me..
1 So download this from any other site like cnet or brothersoft or downloadnet
here it is
http://www.download.com/Super-Spyware-Remover/3000-8022_4-10320005.html

2 go to the update page of superantispyware free editon and download the executable file of latest definitons first
the link is http://www.superantispyware.com/definitions.html

run the definitons as administrator

Pl note the trojan wont allow automatic update and older versions of this software without updates cannot detect and delte this trojan

3 Now run the superantispyware as administrator..and lol it will catch the trojan and quarantine it

4 reboot and now the problem is solved!! U can now update windows/defender/avg/kaspersky and all others..

5 check again for reinfection

Hope this will help lots of people
But my question is how did i get this trojan in the first place despite a good firewall and a security suite?

kspersky, spywaredoctor, nis 2009 do no detect this trojan!!

Malware worked for me i had tried SuperAntispyware a couple of times but it was still giving me problems now i’m able to update with no problems.

The superantispyware works great for this problem. If it is impossible to update, try it from a other computer, because it is important to have the latest update. My problem of updating vista ultimate was because of code 80244019, caused by a trojan called rootkit.agent/GEN-GAOPDX. After remove it, everything works normal.

I was having the same problem during 3 months. I visited many forums to resolve the problem, tried different ways…nothing helped. Yesterday found information about Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware. And it’s really greate!!! I have resolved the problem. Besides it’s very easy: download
http://www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html
then install, do scan and thats all!!!

Hi there,
I was having the exact same issues with the error code not being able to connect to the server so I also found the Malwarebytes Anti-Malware download.
It works awesome
Everything has been updating very well

thanx!..really appreciated!..this thing workeD man!…
m all wit smileSs

Folks,

I appreciate great effort by each one of those who have found the ways of overcoming this issue.
I corrected my problem by download Malwarebytes Ant-Malware software. It has removed the virus that was hindering windows to download updates.
I suggest, before trying other critical options e.g. editing registry or something, please try very basic remedies such has finding the viruses. And of course later we can try advance options as well.
I again thank to the people who helped me to solve this critical problem.
Thanks,

ryan, you are the man!!! have resolved the problem!!!!

Just go to the ipv4 properties . Disable all DNS entries. Restart …and it workss……. it worked for me

Hi all, Thanks for all the advice and tips. Tried all of it but nothing worked. Eventually downloaded windows live OneCare antivirus on a free trial. Scanned and immediately found Trojan:Win32/Alureon.BG and three other Alureon trojans. OneCare got rid of them all and after a couple more restarts and scans I got all of the updates installed. Computer is now Norton and Trojan free. I no longer have an issue with google redirecting my searches and have stopped getting the fake Google English page when I try searching for “Updates”. Good Times!! Thanks for all the posts.

I have the same problem with everybody. But, i dowload SuperAntiSpywear.!it works!….That’s an awesome software!
Thanks everyone!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
The lack of updates, google re-directs, and popups have been driving me mad! I knew it had to be a trojan, but nothing I had could find it. SuperAntiSpyware rules! Screw Norton!

i cant check for updates because of a error

i’m not so good with computersand i’ve tried fixing this but i just don’t know how to keep trying

I was troubled with no windows update for months. I tried every .u.ing thing. finally, superantispyware helped. @ 15 min problem solved. This is great and awesome :)

I had the same problem with my DNS. Windows update works propetly after I set up “DNS on automatic”

Tried all things mentioned by everyone
Malabytes found some trojans removed but still cant update and get google mislinks.
Tried the router but no go
Superantispyware is what im wanting to try but when i run install it crashed wont install anything if i had hair it would be pulled out trying onecare safety scanner now its currently found 2 trojans will wait to see what happens
otherwise laptop goes out the window

Did everything that Markus Kelamaa said and it helped. Don’t forget the Hijackthis virus deleting thing :)

Well i have been having this problem for weeks nad none of the above have worked nor have other sites , with the remedies worked either . I do download alot of movies fron btjunkie and lastnight decided to download trojan remover 6.6.8 build 2518 and bam , everything is back to normal , all updates are working , things back to speck . You must first run your virus scan in safe mode and run it before windows boots , so right click on your anti-virus when you bring it up and you will be prompted to do so . Then download the spyware .

I had the very same problem as every body else, I didn’t change any reg keys and just skipped to Krille’s and Andy’s suggestions, they worked like a charm for me, thank you guys.

I had the dreaded error 0×80244019 in defender, I couldnt update anything, even Mcafee which I have since dumped (thats another story about customer service though)
I followed one of the posts above, i.e I went into connection/LAN settings an switched the IP4 setting DNS to automatic. It wiped the 2 IP addresses that were there (85.255.112.142 & 187) and the updates worked first time even without a reboot. So thanks all…I’m HP now

Cheers & happy easter
Steve

Klass’s last step fixed my problem. Thank you so much !!!!

Um, hello…

I have had a few viruses and I have deleted them all with Norton Internet Security. Now I cannot update my Windows Vista. I have tried following your first steps, but I could not find a \WindowsUpdate\AU tab. I also tried your second recomended steps, but it didn’t fix my problem.

Would it be too much to ask if you could e-mail me and help me further?

killing and disabling the winhttp service let my update work again, thanks for the help!

thank you
service.msc help me and solve this problem

Excellent, downloaded the anti-malware software and it did the trick, thanks :)

The below solution worked like charm for me………

Followed Lenny’s advice (November 2008)and finally the battle is won. It was my wireless router as well(also Linksys G), switched to Wireless N and Windows Update worked flawlessly. Thanks Lenny you rock!

Lenny

Hi
Ive been messing around with exactly this problem for a couple of days now. Windows would not update as it couldne find the server and my google was also messed up, sending me to you tube and a pay per click site whenever i selected a link. I did all the virus removal stuff, to no avail. Finally, i gave the Dutch guys idea a go and finally sorted the problem. The translation he gave needed a little fettling so here is my version. Im running Vista home premium by the way.
1 go to control panel
2 select network and sharing center
3 under network (public network) click view status next to local area connection
4 on the popup box that appears, click properties and click continue on the acknowledgement (if it appears)
5 scroll down to “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and select it with a single click
6 Select properties
7 Under the general tab you will see two sets of boxes, one to select the IP address and one to select the DNS server. Both of these should be set to obtain automatically. If you have numbers in the boxes and the “use the following (IP/DNS server) address is selected, make a note of the numbers (just in case!) and select automatic instead. Click ok and close down all open pages.

I then had to close windows update as it was coming upo with unable to do an update as it was already doing on. Either reboot or alternatively (and quicker) click start, type cmd in the search, on the command prompt icon right click and select run as administrator and acknowledge the popup. type net stop wuauserve and press enter. This will stop windows update. close the command prompt and run windows update and hey presto. Good luck!

I couldn’t find that Registry Key in RegEdit anywhere. I fixed the problem a different and much easier way, although it may not be the solution to your problem here’s what i did:

From ‘Network and Sharing Center’ click on ‘Manage Network Connections’ on the left. Find your the internet connection you are currently using and right click on it then go to properties. In here click on TCP/IPv4 and click properties. I had IP address entered into the DNS server address, all i did was remove these by clicking Obtain DNS automatically, then restarted the computer, now my Windows Update works fine.

Yes the TCP/IVP4 thing worked, i’m useless and i had no clue what i was doing but the virus had also blocked anti virus software..? Thankgod its gone :) thanks!

I HAVE BITDEFENDER INTERNET SECURITY 2009 RUNNING ON HP LAPTOP WITH VISTA HOME PREMIUM. MY WIFE NOTICED A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO THAT WHEN SHE USED INTERNET EXPLORER TO GOOGLE SOMETHING, ANY LINK THAT SHE CHOSE WOULD SEND HER TO AN ALTERNATE WEBSITE. THIS WAS AVOIDED BY USING GOOGLE CHROME INSTEAD OF EXPLORER.
I THEN STARTED TO NOTICE THAT MY BITDEFENDER WOULD NOT UPDATE NOR WOULD MY WINDOWS UPDATE.
AFTER HOURS OF SEARCHING AND TROUBLESHOOTING I FOUND THIS SITE AND CHECKED THE DNS SETTINGS ON IPV4, INSTANTLY MY WINDOWS UPDATE WAS SUCCESSFUL AND BITDEFENDER AS WELL.
ONE OTHER THING THAT I NOTICED IN THE PROCESS WAS THAT I KEPT GETTING A BLOCKED TROJAN.DNSCHANGER.WD FROM BITDEFENDER.
I GUESS I SHOULD HAVE REALIZED THAT THE PROBLEM WAS LINKED TO MY DNS SETTINGS, BUT MY IPV6 CONNECTION THAT I NORMALLY CHECK, WAS SET TO AUTO JUST LIKE IT SHOULD BE. I NEVER ATTEMPTED TO LOOK AT THE IPV4 CONNECTION.
HOPE THIS HELPS SOMEONE OUT THERE WITH THE SAME ISSUE.
GOOD LUCK
PETE

Same problem here there is no Windows Update folder in the regedit.

SO – I am extatic I found this site and these suggestions, I’ve been racking my brains for nearly 3 months uninstalling and reinstalling my mcaffee to learn that it wasn’t mcaffee. I’ve been running SuperAntiSpyware now for 2 hours and it’s picked up 4 trojans (including the changer and a second called .dropper Gen). Not sure why it’s taking so long to finish… any thoughts?

I followed your steps all the way to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\WindowsUpdate\AU]

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
\SOFTWARE
\Policies
\Microsoft
\Windows
\WindowsUpdate
\AU

There is not \WindowsUpdate\AU
So now what do I do?

^^^^

THIS WORKED LIKE A CHARM!!!!!
ANYONE THAT HAD THE 80244019 ERROR DEFFO NEEDS TO TRY THIS OUT BECAUSE IT WORKED PERFECTLY!

JUST MAKE SURE U REBOOT AFTER YOU MAKE ALL THE CHANGES AND THEN GO INTO UPDATE.
:)

Thanks A LOT Drew!!!!

I am really really REALLY happy to download updates again. I’m even so happy that I figured I’d leave a comment!

In fact I never really expected to be able to update ever again without reinstalling Vista. What helped me was
Malwarebytes anti-malware

A long time ago Spyware Search&Destroy found a Trojan-DNS changer, I thought it had removed it completely. Well, I thought wrong.
After a scan with Malwarebytes it found 6 entries in my register, fixed those, and right now I’m downloading 63 updates (550,3 MB).

Thank you very much :)
Peter

For Windows 7:

(1) Go to Control Panel
(2) Click Network and Sharing Center
(3) Click “Manage Wireless Network”
(4) Click on your Network Connection on the list
(5) …then Click Adapter Properties
(6) Click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Click Properties
(7) Check Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

There is not \WindowsUpdate\AU
So now what do I do?

Hello,

In my case, I was using Windows Seven in a Virtual PC 2007.

DNS was set to automatic, and ipconfig/all was showing 3 DNS picked up, 1-My router, 2-My ISP DNS and 3-My second ISP DNS.

My DHCP was set to a virtual address 10.192.131.254.
I simply set my DNS to this same address.

I hope this will help some1, as it seems different proxy problems have the same error message.

Cheers

I got a problem, when I navegated to Microsoft/Windows directories, “WindowsUpdate/AU” were missing, any help?

Looks like a dns problem Folks. I have had the problem for awhile and finally found the time to really work on it. Thanks to this thread I resolved it. I had manual dns entries in my ipconfiguration. I recorded them and allowed my machine to be automatically assigned DNS. (don’t even remember why i used static entries in the first place.) Now i am just finishing updating the machine.

Thanks all.

It Works !!!

Yeah great this worked changed the dword value from 1 to 0

Many thanks

Dale
