I am trying to copy big file from server hard disk to external USB hard disk and instantly i am getting the following error

Cannot copy file. The Parameter Is Incorrect Error

I tried an xcopy in dos with the same result.I have also tried to copy the same file in my server hard disk with different location and that worked too! So it was something to do with copying to the USB Hard drive.

Finally the penny dropped that my new external HDD was formatted as FAT32 and hence had a maximum file size of 4Gb.A quick reformat my USB hard disk with NTFS and I got my backups squirted across onto the external disk with no trouble.

So you need to make sure your drives are formated with FAT32 it will allow maximum file size of 4Gb so you need to make sure you have formated your external disk with NTFS.

  1. Brilliant, solved my problems straight away, cant belive i didnt think of it, ah well time to go see how the drives are doing formatting away…

  2. I face the same problem when i was trying to copy downloaded mp3 file to mp3player. specialy those file which are downloaded from http://www.mp3.de n i solv it by format player n avoid copying those mp3 file.

  3. I recently had the “parameter is incorrect” error message when trying to copy files from a 4GB USB stick.
Some folders were accessible yet some were not, unless I was on the machine the files originated from.
while trying to fix the problem I needed to install winzip as the program I was installing needed to self extract, so I installed an old copy of 7.1
When I then checked the USB stick I found that this somehow cured the problem and now all the folders and files are accessible.
So in conclusion, install winzip on the PC that has the “parameter incorrect” message and hey-presto.

  4. hi,
i came here looking for a solution coz by cd wont copy. showed the same error. desperately, opened the file in editplus and saved it in my desktop. it worked fine :)

  5. I had this trouble. fixed it by zipping the file while on the usb stick copying the zipped file to the desktop then unzipped again.
It was a 700Mb avi file.

  6. I also have this problem.I tried adding a game from my desktop to my memory stick on my psp and all it says is parameter is incorrect I don’t know what to do HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  7. we are trying to copy a file which is 7GB to an USB drive and we get the same error, ipod flash drive etc.
The file is a main peice of a short film we are working on
how do we get this happening?
This is very very frustrating on my mac you seem to transfer fine but i have to get this from WIN to MAC

  8. *facepalm* sometimes it’s the simplest things………

  9. I was trying to copy a 12 GB file to a 16 GB flash drive and encountered this problem. Zipping reduced the file to about 7 GB but didn’t solve the issue, so I ended up using HJSPLIT to divide the file into 4 files and transfered across okay.

  10. Trying to copy 380kb jpeg images from ———–card using card reader (I lost the cable to hook directly to the camera).

I got the error when trying to drag/drop to my laptop harddrive. Then I unplugged/plugged-in the card reader again… the standard windows wizard came up asking me how I wanted to treat the new device- the first time I said like a ard drive (and got the copy errors) The SECOND time I said retrieve from Scanner or cammera THIS WORKED even though it is reading from the card not through the camera.

  11. Indeed, FAT32 only supports files up to 4 GB. I ran into the same problem when copying an ~4.5 GB file to an 8 GB flash drive.

There is a quicker solution that doesn’t require you to reformat or lose data on the drive, using the command-line “convert” command. Suppose the flash drive is mounted to g:\. Open up a command window (start menu -> run -> cmd), and type:

    convert G: /FS:NTFS.

Personally, I don’t need the “security descriptors” on the flash drive file system, so I use the variant:

    convert G: /FS:NTFS /NoSecurity.

The conversion should be very quick, and of course it has the benefit of not needing to move any files off the flash drive (since you don’t need to reformat it).

I hope that helps somebody. — Paul

  15. My external hard drive, that has been working fine for the past 3 months, now causes windows explorer to hang whenever i click on the hard drive icon in ‘my computer’

After a while when it “unhangs” the message that pops up either says ‘cannot open G/ the parameter is incorrect’
OR ‘to open this drive you must format it’

If i try and format it all the data will be erased, so how do i fix the parameter or format my hard drive without deleting anything ?

    Please Help :)

  16. Problem:
    I couldn’t copy files(Java…) to my phone.
    Solution:
I disabled the “Enhanced USB Host Controller.” (In Windows XP, you can find it under: Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers.) This will downgrade your USB speed from 2.0 to 1.1, but it consumes less power (which ensures a more stable connection).
    Works GREAT!!!

  17. wow! amazing! thank you so much cloudy! now ill be able to enjoy the movies i copied on my phone… ur such a winner! ^^

  20. This worked for me. I was trying to copy a 4.6 GB zip file to a flash drive for my employer. Got the same parameter incorrect error. Tried breaking it up with the versions of Winzip and Winrar that were installed on the server and they couldn’t handle it. Discovered they only had Winzip 8.1. Installed Winzip 11.1, extracted the original zip file and recompressed it into 700 MB units and they copied fine. Thanks for the tip.

  31. good suggestion, but doesn;t work for me. I’m trying to copy a file from a mac to a pc using my 8gb flash drive. i do get the same ‘incorrect error’ but I only have the option to format it as MS-DOS (FAT) or Mac Exteded. I put the drive in my vista OS and it’s only fromat options were UDf 2.nnn and the format fails for all those options anyways, so i have no way to format it as NTFS nor do I have any way of copying or sharing the file…
