Fix for Cannot copy file. The Parameter Is Incorrect Error
I am trying to copy big file from server hard disk to external USB hard disk and instantly i am getting the following error
Cannot copy file. The Parameter Is Incorrect Error
I tried an xcopy in dos with the same result.I have also tried to copy the same file in my server hard disk with different location and that worked too! So it was something to do with copying to the USB Hard drive.
Finally the penny dropped that my new external HDD was formatted as FAT32 and hence had a maximum file size of 4Gb.A quick reformat my USB hard disk with NTFS and I got my backups squirted across onto the external disk with no trouble.
So you need to make sure your drives are formated with FAT32 it will allow maximum file size of 4Gb so you need to make sure you have formated your external disk with NTFS.

I recently had the “parameter is incorrect” error message when trying to copy files from a 4GB USB stick.
Some folders were accessible yet some were not, unless I was on the machine the files originated from.
while trying to fix the problem I needed to install winzip as the program I was installing needed to self extract, so I installed an old copy of 7.1
When I then checked the USB stick I found that this somehow cured the problem and now all the folders and files are accessible.
So in conclusion, install winzip on the PC that has the “parameter incorrect” message and hey-presto.
hi,
i came here looking for a solution coz by cd wont copy. showed the same error. desperately, opened the file in editplus and saved it in my desktop. it worked fine
I had this trouble. fixed it by zipping the file while on the usb stick copying the zipped file to the desktop then unzipped again.
It was a 700Mb avi file.
I also have this problem.I tried adding a game from my desktop to my memory stick on my psp and all it says is parameter is incorrect I don’t know what to do HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
we are trying to copy a file which is 7GB to an USB drive and we get the same error, ipod flash drive etc.
The file is a main peice of a short film we are working on
how do we get this happening?
This is very very frustrating on my mac you seem to transfer fine but i have to get this from WIN to MAC
*facepalm* sometimes it’s the simplest things………
I was trying to copy a 12 GB file to a 16 GB flash drive and encountered this problem. Zipping reduced the file to about 7 GB but didn’t solve the issue, so I ended up using HJSPLIT to divide the file into 4 files and transfered across okay.
Trying to copy 380kb jpeg images from ———–card using card reader (I lost the cable to hook directly to the camera).
I got the error when trying to drag/drop to my laptop harddrive. Then I unplugged/plugged-in the card reader again… the standard windows wizard came up asking me how I wanted to treat the new device- the first time I said like a ard drive (and got the copy errors) The SECOND time I said retrieve from Scanner or cammera THIS WORKED even though it is reading from the card not through the camera.
Indeed, FAT32 only supports files up to 4 GB. I ran into the same problem when copying an ~4.5 GB file to an 8 GB flash drive.
There is a quicker solution that doesn’t require you to reformat or lose data on the drive, using the command-line “convert” command. Suppose the flash drive is mounted to g:\. Open up a command window (start menu -> run -> cmd), and type:
convert G: /FS:NTFS.
Personally, I don’t need the “security descriptors” on the flash drive file system, so I use the variant:
convert G: /FS:NTFS /NoSecurity.
The conversion should be very quick, and of course it has the benefit of not needing to move any files off the flash drive (since you don’t need to reformat it).
I hope that helps somebody. — Paul
I also got the error when I try to transfer files onto my N95 Nokia Cellphone, but I fixed yesterday. I posted the instruction on my web page: http://cloudydream.net84.net/index.php?p=1_8

My external hard drive, that has been working fine for the past 3 months, now causes windows explorer to hang whenever i click on the hard drive icon in ‘my computer’
After a while when it “unhangs” the message that pops up either says ‘cannot open G/ the parameter is incorrect’
OR ‘to open this drive you must format it’
If i try and format it all the data will be erased, so how do i fix the parameter or format my hard drive without deleting anything ?
Please Help
Problem:
I couldn’t copy files(Java…) to my phone.
Solution:
I disabled the “Enhanced USB Host Controller.” (In Windows XP, you can find it under: Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Universal Serial Bus controllers.) This will downgrade your USB speed from 2.0 to 1.1, but it consumes less power (which ensures a more stable connection).
Works GREAT!!!
wow! amazing! thank you so much cloudy! now ill be able to enjoy the movies i copied on my phone… ur such a winner! ^^
Bless you Jeff Allen ! :^ )
credit goes to Jeff Allen not to cloudy….
its very helpful jeff, tnx a lot
This worked for me. I was trying to copy a 4.6 GB zip file to a flash drive for my employer. Got the same parameter incorrect error. Tried breaking it up with the versions of Winzip and Winrar that were installed on the server and they couldn’t handle it. Discovered they only had Winzip 8.1. Installed Winzip 11.1, extracted the original zip file and recompressed it into 700 MB units and they copied fine. Thanks for the tip.
Hi Cloudy,
Ur Suggestion worked,thanks a lot..
Cheers \\m//
thank u v much cloudy…been a long time since ive been able to transfer files to my usb stick until your solution
Yo just need to Defragment the USB drive and the existing files will remain there even after defragmentation.

good suggestion, but doesn;t work for me. I’m trying to copy a file from a mac to a pc using my 8gb flash drive. i do get the same ‘incorrect error’ but I only have the option to format it as MS-DOS (FAT) or Mac Exteded. I put the drive in my vista OS and it’s only fromat options were UDf 2.nnn and the format fails for all those options anyways, so i have no way to format it as NTFS nor do I have any way of copying or sharing the file…

Hi guys i m getting “the parameter is incorrect” when i start my computer and then it shut down automatically and when i try to watch youtube after watching 1 min or less than 1 min this “parrameter is incorrect” pop up. please help me with this problem i m very frustrated about this problem. Thanks for the solutions.
I was trying to copy a 70mb AVI file from an 8Gb MemoryStick Pro to the hard drive, and it would not copy because the parameter was incorrect.
I used AllToAVI (alltoavi.sourceforge.net) to capture the AVI file from the memory stick, when all other programs failed to open it.
I originally downloaded AllToAVI because it correctly reads subtitles from .mkv video files.
The 70mb file in question is now safely on my hard drive.
I have to have my hd formatted to FAT32 because iuse it on my PS3, so wat are the ways around that. trying to store bigger files that 4.5gb on FAT32
I tried to copy a 1.2GB file from C:\torrent to a 4GB flash drive that had 1.8 GB free and got this error. I tried renaming the file to a smaller name, without special characters and still, same error, then tried deleting a ;large file that was on the USB drive, leaving 2.45GB free, hoping it was a fragmentation issue, still the same error. I was able to copy the file to the root of H: drive (a different drive, not just another partition, I have many…), then was able to successfully copy it from the root of H: to the USB drive. I still do not know what caused the error, nor why copying from a different location worked. Windows XP Pro SP3, USB formatted FAT32, C: is first partition, 234GB in size on 500GB drive, H: is last partition, 215GB in size on a second, same make/model 500GB drive. Both partitions are NTFS. Can anyone explain what is going on?
I used a 32GB Delkin SDHC cards to film a wedding with a Canon 60D (DSLR camera). Yesterday when i was transferring the files to my cpu, one of the .mov files which contained the whole ceremony kept giving me parameter errors or device not ready… i tried transferring and converting it via CanopusProcoder directly from the card and only managed to extract half of the 3GB file.. the rest of the file i cannot seem to transfer, it would stop midway through the transfer/extraction and give me the errors. I’ve tried 2 different card readers and 3 different computers. all other files in the card went through smoothly with no problems.
Thanks,
Ken
Thanx a ton jeff allen …solved my problem and saved my day now i can got sleep in peace

so to correct it Follow the Procedure:
- Right click on the desired Drive and select Properties.
- Then in the Properties , Go to Tools Tab.
- Press the “check Now” button.
- Check ,
* Auto fix Errors.
* Scan for Bad sectors.

Hi ,
i have a prob with my flash memory ( 4 gb) , the pc asked me to format it to can use it, and after i formatted i have only 4MB , i’ve tried to enter in Disk Management it says the same 4Mb…please help
Thanks
“”" Indeed, FAT32 only supports files up to 4 GB.
— Paul “”"
Thank you so much Jeff Allen !
