Did not work and screwed me up more. Before, my Vista wireless laptop cannot ping google.com but can ping its IP, and firefox and IE do not work. My hardwired PC can ping both, and firefox and IE work OK on it. (Therefore, DNS config on laptop suspect?)
After making suggested regedit, net stop DNScache produced ‘System Error 5″. I rebooted. Now wireless can not ping by IP (even after backing out the change to regedit and rebooting again).
Now trying a system restore to get back to where was.

This works. I was not able to open symantec, microsoft URLs. I followed the instructions, it worked.
