Open registry editor go to Start—>Run type regedit click ok
Now you need to navigate to the following registry key from left pane
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts\.ext\OpenWithList
Here .ext is the file extension for the file type whose ‘Open With’ list you wish to edit.
Now, just delete the value in this key, that represents the program to be removed, from the ‘Open With’ list.

When I got to the end of the chain\OpenWithList, there was NOTHING in the box! Most exasperating.
Where else can these programs hiding.
It’s easy to add a program, but seemingly impossible to take it back.
No problem finding and removing the unwanted progs, per the suggested tip, but I would also recommend editing the corresponding “MRUList” data field by deleting the removed “name” letter(s) that were removed with the unwanted prog(s) (you’ll know what I’m talking about if/when you perform the tip).
Doesn’t work in Windows 7 (64Bit)!
The values always come back – even after a restart!
