Use ‘Open command window here’ in XP/Vista

Opening a command prompt and navigating to a specific folder can be both time consuming and mind numbing at the same time.

Vista/XP Command Prompt Here helps to eliminate the process of opening a command prompt.It also assists with getting around User Account Control limitations within a Vista Workstation.

Windows Vista

To install in Vista, extract then right click the installation file and select run as administrator.

If you are logged on as an administrator, and right click a folder then select Command Prompt you will be presented with a command window with limited rights in the folder you selected. This means you may not have admin rights to the folder even if you are an administrator of the workstation.

If you are logged on as an administrator, and right click a folder then select Elevated Command Prompt you will be presented with a User Account Control (ever after referred to as UAC) continue/abort screen asking for permissions to run “command” with admin rights.

Click continue and you will open a command window with full admin rights in the folder you right clicked on. If the user is an administrator of the workstation you will not have to provide additional credentials. If you are logged on as other than administrator of the workstation then you would be prompted for an administrators username and password.

Windows XP

If you install it on an XP workstation it will act as follows:

· If Logged on as an administrator, and you right click any folder and select Command Prompt Here you will Open a Command Window with admin rights in the directory of the folder you right clicked. If you select Elevated Command Prompt you will be prompted with a logon screen. If you type in an administrators UN/PW and have full admin rights at the command window, which you already have.

· If Logged on as other than administrator, and you right click any folder and select Command Prompt Here you will Open a Command Window with your appropriate rights in that directory of the folder you right clicked. If you select Elevated Command Prompt you will be prompted with a logon screen. If you type in an administrators UN/PW and have full admin rights at the command window.

or you can try the following registry hack for Windows Vista

just like every other version of Windows, you can edit the registry to add the Open Command rompt Here to the right-mouse click menu. Copy and paste the following text into Notepad, save it a .reg file, then simply double-click the .reg file and import it into the registry:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell\Command Prompt]
@=”Open Command Prompt Here”

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Classes\Folder\shell\Command Prompt\command]
@=”Cmd.exe /k pushd %L”
