In Windows XP, Windows Updates or Automatic updates may stop working after you repair your Windows installation using the Windows XP CD or you cleaned up WIndows Registry using a Registry cleaner software for windows.

This can happen because

the repair installation process would have replaced the latest Wups2.dll on your system with the original version of the file that was available on the CD

or

the registry cleaner would removed a required Registry key

To resolve the problem

Download latest Windows update Agent

1. Download the latest Windows Update Agent for your system from Microsoft Download Center.

Windows XP (32 bit)

Windows XP (64 bit)

Windows XP (A64)

2. Install from Start – Run as follows:

C:\:\WindowsUpdateAgent30-x86.exe /wuforce

[NOTE: assuming you downloaded the file to the C:\ drive]

This should fix the problem.

Re-Register Wups2.dll

Alternatively, you may re-register the Wups2.dll file as follows:

1. From the command prompt, stop the Windows update service

c:\> net stop wuauserv

2. Register the wups2.dll file

c:\>regsvr32 %windir%\system32\wups2.dll

For X64

c:\>regsvr32 %windir%\system64\wups2.dll

This should fix the problem
